How to live in a college town.

REVIEW: The District

Yesterday, I reviewed the Augusta on the Square where location reigns supreme, but today let’s take a look at The District.

The District is a lot different from the Augusta.  Located about 3.8 miles away from the downtown campus (according to Google Maps), The District tries to make up for its commute by giving residents a “resort style” atmosphere.

When you pay for rent, you will also be able to use free cable, tanning beds, a pool and hot tub, volleyball court, basketball court, billiards table, jogging trail and horseshoe area.

To get a better taste of the “clubhouse” take a look at the interactive map provided on their website.

The District also provides a shuttle to the Medical Center PRT station during class time and to the downtown area at night.

Pets are permitted on a limited basis and for a hefty, non-refundable fee (dogs and cats under 30 lbs and fish).

Utilities are included in the rent unless residents exceed a predetermined amount over a three-month period.

Parking is included in rent for residents and guest.

The biggest drawback to living at The District is the distance from town and campus which makes having a car a must.  It would be hard to depend on the shuttle and bus services to get back and forth all of the time.

I would also recommend reading the lease carefully (just like you would in every situation) because there are some costs and fees that aren’t listed outright on the website.

Breakdown by the Cent (as of 3/11/10):

  • RENT (not published online) (I’ll get the info though!)
  • APPLICATION FEE $35
  • SECURITY DEPOSIT $175 (non-refundable), $125 (refunded upon faithful completion of lease)
  • RESERVATION FEE $140
  • PET FEE $350 (non-refundable deposit), $25 (monthly fee in addition to rent)

  1. The District is good for people who want to get away from downtown a little bit but still have the college atmosphere. All of the extra amenities like pool/hot tub, volleyball and basketball courts and small workout gym are all appealing.

  2. I think all of the amenities do sound nice at the district…but really, how often do the people who live there use them? I don’t think I could dedicate myself to using all of what they have to offer and actually get my money’s worth.

  3. I agree, yes there IS a nice pool, but how often is it warm enough to use it?

If you’re planning on going home for the summer especially, I wouldn’t rent just because it has a nice pool, a hot tub, and free tanning.

Besides, the pool lacks security….you don’t AcTUALLY have to live there to use it, ha ha
